Chingaza Páramo & the Frailejones

9 hoursMax 10Challenging

Before you book this one

This goes to 3,200–3,800 m — well above Bogotá. Cold, wet and exposed with no shelter, and the altitude is the real difficulty rather than the walking. Requires a park permit we arrange in advance. Not suitable in your first days at altitude, in pregnancy, or with cardiac or respiratory conditions.

Páramo is a high Andean moorland that exists almost nowhere else on earth, and it supplies most of Bogotá’s drinking water. Thousands of silver frailejones standing in the mist, glacial lakes, and spectacled bear country.

What you do

  • Frailejón forest — an ecosystem unique to the northern Andes
  • Glacial lakes at 3,200–3,800 m
  • Where the capital’s water actually comes from
  • Spectacled bear and páramo deer habitat

As a private booking

Private permit and vehicle, a park biologist as guide, and a route away from the standard visitor loop.

Practical notes for Bogotá

  • Altitude is real. At 2,640 m the air holds about a quarter less oxygen than at sea level. Give yourself 24–48 hours before anything strenuous, drink more water than feels necessary, and go easy on alcohol the first night. Altitude sickness is uncommon here but not unheard of.
  • It is colder than you expect. People pack for the Caribbean and shiver. Bogotá sits at 8–19 °C. Bring a warm layer and a rain shell — the weather changes within an hour and the rain is sideways.
